Closing the Achievement Gaps

Understanding the Results

This section provides a basic overview of the outputs from the three surveys. In addition, it provides some guiding questions for you to consider in the analysis of your results. Finally, it highlights five scenarios of districts, each using the surveys for a different purpose. The illustrations will help you understand how to analyze and interpret the data.

Instructional Practice Results
These reports illustrate how groups of teachers responded to the instructional practice survey questions. The questions are grouped in scales, so that you can easily view summary level data of the main categories. The reports visually scale your results for easy interpretation. You can look at your individual or school data compared to your district or other larger group. A sample report of aggregate results by grade level is available. Each section of the display is numbered. Move your mouse over the section to learn more about it. Similar displays can be viewed for each subsection. A list of available categories can be viewed.

Instructional Content Results
These results illustrate what teachers teach in a visual display that facilitates custom comparisons of data, ranging from individual teacher results to state assessments. With the online survey, each teacher can be given access to see his or her individual data compared to a larger group. In addition, individual, school, or district data can be compared to state standards or assessments. View a sample Web-based report. Technical support and assistance with survey results is available.

Guiding Questions
These questions are designed to facilitate data analysis and hypothesis generation.

Scenarios
Scenarios of three schools using the SEC in three different ways.

Shady Tree Elementary
The Road to Alignment in English/Language Arts

Dr. Sandy Long, the principal of Shady Tree Elementary, wants to launch an initiative to more closely align what is taught in the classroom to the state standards and assessments. She decides to use SEC to provide a baseline measure of where her teachers are in English/Language Arts. She'll identify gaps and institute changes in the curriculum. She then plans to work with her staff to give the SEC again next year to assess progress.

Mountville High School
Aligning Algebra Curriculum Across Multiple Courses

The teachers at Mountville High School have been asked to improve the articulation between Algebra courses. Specifically, they decided to use the SEC to look at Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, and Algebra II. With the results from their surveys in front of them, the teachers begin to have conversations about what changes need to be made to make sure students are prepared for the next course. After talking about the curriculum, the teachers also look at how different practices in the classroom effect learning of the students.

Connersville School District
Professional Development in Science

Connersville School District has hired Maria Thompson, a professional development consultant, to explore where professional development is needed among their middle school staff, particularly in the area of science. Maria has decided to give the SEC science content and practice surveys to the teachers as a starting point to assess their professional development needs and wants. In addition to the professional development help, the SEC process will create a constructive and open conversation throughout the school staff.
