Understanding the Results: SEC Scenarios

Connersville School District
Professional Development in Science

The Connersville School District administration liked this overview plan, and after seeing some sample graph they could see the benefits of using SEC. Money and time were allocated for use of the SEC, and substitute teachers were even arranged for portions of the online survey taking. Two weeks later, the surveys were completed and Maria had online access to the results.

By looking at the SEC content maps for the eigth-grade standards and comparing it to the eigth-grade teachers teaching content, it became quite evident what content areas they were overlooking. The standards called for a deeper understanding in measurement and calculation in science, and earth science. The teachers were teaching those topics very generally, and not getting to the depth that the standards called for. It seemed by the graphs that their concentration in the life and physical science was a bit too much in comparison to the standards. Overall, the eigth-grade teachers needed to think about covering some of their content areas a little more deeply over the course of the year. She made some notes about these areas and expected that she could connect her instructional practice professional development to them in her plan.
